Tackling

Pessuring the ball
Never charge in at the ball, because it makes it harder for to change direction sharply. Rather than charge in contain the attacker. To contain (or jockey) means to hold up your opponent by placing your self in front of your attacker, and either wait for them to have a bad touch or release the ball. Some dribblers will move the ball without providing you with adequate time for a tackle. All you can do in such cases is remain between the ball carrier and your own goal.

containing (jockeying)
When containing an opponent it's important that as a defender that you lower you center of gravity. By this i mean bending your knees and leaning a touch forward. Keep moving, don't stand still, if the attacker is moving at pace then backpedal at a speed where you slow your opponent, but not to slow where the attacker can just run past you. While in your jockeying stance, it's important that you show the attacker the way you him to go. By standing on a 45 degree angle, if you want the attacker to go to your right then you move your body to your left to show him to the right.

Block tackle
The block tackle is the most basic way of depleting an opponent of the ball. It is designed to give you possession while keeping you on your feet. Plant your supporting foot firmly so that you don't lose balance. Then, just as your opponent contacts the ball, you must put your free foot perpendicularly to the direction in which he is moving. If executed properly, this will cause your enemy to stumble or cough up the ball.

Poke tackle
With poke tackling, you basically stab the ball away from your opponent. You must use the foot which is closer to the ball. This method does not guarantee that you will gain possession of the ball. This can be effective for central defenders as the striker recieves the ball with his back to you, your putting pressure on them, the stiker has a bad touch this gives you a chance to get the ball. At this moment you must make a decision, if go for the ball you must win it or shut the stiker down again.

Slide tackle
Although spectacular, slide tackling should not be used unless in desperation or when you're away from your own goal. It can also be very effective against opponents dribbling down the sideline or shielding the ball. Remember not to raise the studs as you can be sent off.
